Toyota Mirai Hydrogen Car Begins Trial Run in India: Is This the Future of Mobility?
India hydrogen mobility story is getting its first real chapter. Toyota has rolled out its Mirai Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicle for a trial run in Delhi and Mumbai under a joint initiative with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy as part of the National Hydrogen Mission.
The Toyota Mirai offers a driving range of over 500 km on a single fill of hydrogen and can be refueled in under five minutes, a significant advantage over battery electric vehicles that require longer charging times. The only emission from the tailpipe is water vapor, making it one of the cleanest vehicles on the road.
However, the biggest challenge remains infrastructure. India currently has fewer than 10 hydrogen refueling stations, concentrated around Delhi NCR. The government has set a target of establishing over 400 hydrogen stations by 2030 under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
Experts suggest that while battery EVs will dominate personal mobility in the short term, hydrogen is the more viable solution for long-haul transport, heavy trucks, and commercial fleets. The Mirai trial is an important first step toward building that ecosystem in India.
